In the last year, scientists have discovered a host of new species. Located from the deepest depths of the sea, to land, what organisms have been founded or put in the spotlight this year?
Strange Ghost Sharks
Known scientifically as the Chimaera, another species of Ghost Sharks have been identified, in May 2026 by Ocean Census. Founded off the coast of Queensland, Australia, this remarkable creature has inquisited humans for generations. The mysterious fish-like figure, strangely, is not scientifically classed as a shark at all. Accurately, they belong in the cartilaginous fish family.
Different to sharks, Ghost Sharks majorly use the rows of sharp teeth for prey. Their diet includes a small range from: molluscs to worms. Chillingly, the ghost sharks prefer the colder temperatures up to 6,600 ft. The new species of shark has bewildered Australians.

Spooky Symbiotic Worms
Founded in Shichiyo Seamount Chain, Japan, the worm looks transparent. Labelled scientifically as Dalhousiella yabukii, its translucent skeleton is made from glass sponges. Magnificently, it is the same material humans use to construct windows! This species was spotted by Dr Nato Jimi and published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.

Deadly Death Ball Sponges
Near Antartica, an odd finding has been discovered. A carnivorous sponge was located 2.2 miles deep in a trench north of, Montagu Island in the Southern Ocean. Uniquely, the species catches its prey through hooking and absorbing. The body defends itself by the velcro-alike attack, highlighting its ominous nature.
A University of Essex scientist, named Dr Michelle Taylor, led the expedition and discussed the brutality of the creatures. Taylor stated "If anything brushes up against them, they're doomed, unfortunately. Then to be absorbed slowly over time is a grim way of going." The Death Ball Sponges are individual and creepy creatures, however their capabilities have captured many scientists interest.

Fascinating Psychedelic Earth Tigers
On land, a terrifying critter has been detected. Founded in the forests of India, this has marvelled millions. The arachnid is formally known as the Cilantica devamatha. Unlike the three other creatures, this critter had already been discovered, but gained more media attention this year. It is notorious for its vibrant violent pigmentation and striking tones, although the species are close to experiencing extinction. This is contributed by illegal pet trade, which decreases their population in the wild. Due to this, it has alarmed major organisations to protect and preserve their numbers, before it is too late.

So far 2026 has marked a revolutionary year for animal discoveries. From fishes to worms, many organisms have been located in the wild. Although, this has alarmed scientists of other species that are facing a decline. What will the next year bring for scientific discoveries?
