Former Conservative minister, broadcaster and Reform UK spokesperson Ann Widdecombe has died at the age of 78, her management has confirmed.

The news has prompted tributes from across the political spectrum, recognising a career that spanned decades in public life and made her one of Britain's most recognisable political figures.

Widdecombe served as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Maidstone and The Weald from 1987 until 2010. During her time in government under Sir John Major, she held several ministerial positions, including Minister of State for Employment and later Prisons Minister. She became known for her outspoken views, sharp debating style and willingness to challenge political opponents.

After leaving Parliament, Widdecombe remained firmly in the public eye. She became a familiar television personality through appearances on programmes including Strictly Come Dancing, Celebrity Big Brother and a number of documentaries, introducing her to audiences well beyond Westminster.

In 2019, she left the Conservative Party to join the Brexit Party, later serving as a Member of the European Parliament for South West England. She subsequently became a prominent supporter and spokesperson for Reform UK, remaining active in British politics in recent years.

A statement released by her management said: "It is with great sadness that today we announce the death of the Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe, DSG. We send our deepest condolences to Ann's family and friends and ask that the family's wish for privacy at this difficult time is respected."

Political figures from across the UK have paid tribute to Widdecombe, acknowledging her decades of public service, determination and distinctive presence in British political life. While her views often divided opinion, she remained one of the country's most recognisable and influential political voices, admired by supporters for speaking her mind and respected by many opponents for her conviction and authenticity.

Devon and Cornwall Police have since confirmed they are investigating the circumstances surrounding her death after she was found with serious injuries at her home in Devon. A murder investigation has been launched and officers are searching for a male suspect. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward as enquiries continue.

Ann Widdecombe's career spanned almost four decades in frontline politics and public life. Whether in Parliament, on television or campaigning for causes she believed in, she remained a prominent figure whose influence extended well beyond Westminster.
