Sport Successes, Wedding Conspiracies, and Relationship Splits: This Week in Pop Culture

Finally - a week characterised by lots of internet drama and speculation, as well as some exciting triumphs for Britain in sport - let's recap what's happened in pop culture!

Taylor Swift's extravagant New York wedding

It was finally confirmed last weekend that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce tied the knot in an extraordinary celebration in New York's Madison Square Garden, amongst weeks of speculation. As of now, there are yet to be any photos released from the ceremony or specific details to be confirmed, yet we do know that actor Adam Sandler officiated the couple's wedding.

The news was confirmed on Friday evening, July 4th, with screens in New York lighting up with the words "JUST&T MARRIED", as well as hundreds of stars being seen around the streets of the city, heading to celebrate the couple's big event.

According to BBC Radio One host Greg James, who attended with his wife Bella Mackie, he described the wedding as an "amazingly strange but exciting dream", surrounded by approximately 1,000 people on the guest list, full of stars ranging from actors to singers, and that the ceremony was completely confidential, even to his workplace.

However, Swift's crazy wedding hasn't concluded without significant backlash, with the internet circulating rumours about how she walked down the aisle to a rendition of one of her songs, as well as including the lyrics "So it's gonna be forever...", from her 2014 hit 'Black Space', embroidered onto napkins at the wedding. As a result, people have named the wedding tacky and cringe, highlighting Swift's self-centredness and criticising the couple's flamboyance.

As for now, more information is yet to come out about the wedding, but it will be interesting to see if there's a future Taylor Swift post on the horizon to confirm any of these rumours.

Pop legend Bonnie Tyler dies

It was announced yesterday that pop legend Bonnie Tyler died unexpectedly, just weeks after coming out of her previously induced coma, following an emergency intestinal surgery, at age 75.

Bonnie Tyler was a Welsh singer best known for her 1983 hit 'Total Eclipse of the Heart', as well as 'It's a Heartache' and 'Holding Out For a Hero', featured familiarly and famously on the Shrek 2 soundtrack.

As well as this, Tyler represented the UK at Eurovision in 2013, performing her song 'Believe In Me', placing 19th out of 26 acts in Malmo, Sweden.

The news is certainly unexpected and heartbreaking for fans of herself and music alike, where her ballads were pioneering for many years to come; her legacy is sure to last with her unforgettable hits.

Arthur Fery becomes first British Wild Card to reach Wimbledon semi-finals

After defeating the Italian Wimbledon favourite Flavio Cobolli in a triumphant match on Wednesday, Britain's Arthur Fery becomes the first ever male singles British wild card to reach the Wimbledon semi-final, taking place today at 13:30. Fery will be up against Germany's Alexander Zverev to decide who secure a place in the final, against either 2025 winner Jannik Sinner, or tennis veteran Novak Djokovic.

Fery stormed ahead in Wednesday's game, securing the first set 6-4, second set 7-6 (with a 7-4 tie break out of 70, and finished off dominating the match by ending the third and final set with a 6-0 win on Wimbledon's centre court.

The 23-year-old was consistently being cheered on by the support of Wimbledon's British crowd, boasting many prominent figures such as the Queen Consort herself, Camilla, creating an electric atmosphere that will hopefully secure Fery his place in Wimbledon's final this Sunday.

Jack Antonoff and Margaret Qualley reportedly split

42-year-old pop producer and front of American pop band Bleachers, Jack Antonoff, has reportedly split from 31-year-old actor Margaret Qualley, amongst rumours of a divorce sparked by Qualley's absence from Taylor Swift's wedding last week.

Qualley is most popularly known for being the daughter of acting legend Andie MacDowell, but has recently rose to fame for her multiple nominations for her role as Sue in 2024's psychological body horror The Substance, which dominated the box office with its weird and wacky storyline.

The rumoured split comes as a shock to their short three-year marriage, yet it is reported that it is because of differing career lifestyles and issues with their age-gap.

For now, there is yet to be specific confirmation about their split, and the reasons for it, but for now Jack Antonoff has removed most of his posts featuring Qualley on his Instagram, so it is likely that the rumours are, indeed, true.
