Why are Pubs Plummeting and Cafes Crazing?

Over 40,000 pubs reside in the United Kingdom and many are dwindling. However, why are cafes prospering?

From inflation, to the cost of living crisis, challenges have risen for small businesses. This is seen with pubs. They are a beloved part of UK culture for thousands of years. Whilst they were innovated in Britain, it is a prominent part of British life, as many reside on our street corners. Originally rising from Roman influence, one of the oldest known pubs in Britain is around 1,073 years old. Although, recently modern struggles have straggled their growth. Issues like: war, the living crisis and inflation, have weakened the hospitality industry altogether.  Notably, an estimated 1,103 pubs closed in 2025. Although, cafes around the country are in high demand, as consumers are spending more on coffee than a pint nowadays. Many are wondering why are pubs plummeting?

What other factors are contributing to the closure of pubs?

A range of reasons attribute to the mitigation of pubs. One influential reason is a consequence of the 2007 smoking law, which altered pub norms entirely. This ban made smoking illegal indoors and this was apart of the Health Act 2006. Because of this, locals visited less to the pubs, as they were forced to smoke outdoors. Nowadays, many do not acknowledge the change of smoking outdoors due to it becoming a normal rule in everyday life. But in the late 2000's, this change was powerful and changing. 

A clear reason for pub closures is linked with high taxation. Reportedly, one third of every pound spent at the pub directly goes to tax. With other attributing factors like the cost of living and inflation, other challenges have significantly weakened the population of pubs. Energy bills are another hardship. Since 2010, energy bills have doubled in the last sixteen years. This is also attributed by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Additionally, the attitude of consumers has influenced the fate of pubs. Younger people have experienced the so called "coffee craze", where they fill local coffee shops, but not visit the pubs. Allegedly, university students opinion of alcohol has changed. Many are not interested in the cost and effects of alcohol, although this was majorly different 20 years ago. 

Why is the demand of coffee shops rising?

The perception of cafes has changed drastically. At first thought to be a quick brew stop, it is now more of a place for: catchup, connections and coffee breaks. Alongside this, coffee shops are generally cheaper than high end restaurants. Instead of paying a large bill, a short catchup coffee for a fiver, is more reasonable for consumers to pay for. Cafes act as a middle ground for dining out, but for a much cheaper price. Astonishingly, the UK drinks around 98 million cups of coffee daily. This is driven by a range of factors, from the customisation of coffee to shoppers specific cravings. Recently, beverage trends like matcha and ube have wondered many; local coffee shops have been jumping on consumer's interests.  Cafe's flexibility to purchasers tastes, certainly elevates their popularity.

In conclusion, coffee and pints are a popular part of the country's appetite. This is evident on a smooth Saturday morning, when you get grab a brew at the and a late night drink at the local pub.
