Is There Still a North & South Divide?

The north and south of England can be polar opposites in terms of: politics, culture and economy. However, does this divide still exist in 2026?

What is the north and south divide?

The north and south divide is not a physical line, it is a divide that socially differentiates southern England to northern England. This significantly occurred in the 1920's-1930s and has happened for generations. Because of: geography, history and industrialisation, this contributed to the unfairness in England. 

Where is the unfairness seen?

One strong example example of this is the difference in the economy.  Reportedly, the gross domestic product is much higher in London compared to the south.  Especially, in the North East and Yorkshire. Alongside this, employment opportunities are significantly more in the south, where there is more high skilled jobs available and living standards are lower. This demonstrates the sheer differences between the north and south. Moreover, infrastructure and transportation systems are weaker in the north. Southern areas like Greater London, prosper from stronger transport methods like: trains and trams. This is also evident with airports. However, recent changes have developed in the north for better transport like publicising the buses. 

Another evident example is linked to life expectancy. Notably, the north suffers more deaths associated with: cancer, mental health and heart disease, compared to the southern region.  Although, in 2025 scientists recorded that people are living longer around 80-84 years old. In London, there has been a significant rise in life expectancy, but in the north this has not increased. Locations like the Midlands, north east and north west have been credible examples of this. Evidently, in Blackpool women on average live eight years shorter than women in Hampshire. This is due to a range of reasons like: a lack of public funding into public services, habits and poverty. Historically, northern areas have more smokers and drinkers, in comparison to the south.  

What does this mean overall?

On the whole, the divide has a slow recovery rate to overcome the unfairness in the north. However, solutions have been implemented to overcome some struggles. Allegedly, the government is strengthening infrastructure the north and plan to defeat the economic differences in England. Additionally, the constant changing plans of HS2 is anticipated to strengthen the north's economy, if it is pursued.
