Sports Journalist
Devote Radio is a new multi-platform radio station and media brand serving Walsall and beyond. Broadcasting on Small-Scale DAB, online, mobile apps and smart speakers, we're building a modern destination for music, entertainment, news and community-focused content.
Alongside our radio output, Devote Radio produces a growing range of online content covering news, entertainment, pop culture and local stories. We're now looking to expand our editorial team with passionate Sports Journalists to help grow our sports coverage.
Who This Role Is For
As a Sports Journalist, you will research, write and publish engaging sports content for the Devote Radio website. You'll help keep our audience informed with match reports, feature articles, opinion pieces, athlete interviews and breaking sports stories from both local and national sporting events.
This is an exciting opportunity for aspiring journalists, sports enthusiasts, students, graduates or experienced writers looking to build their portfolio while contributing to a growing media platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and write accurate, engaging sports news articles.
- Cover local, regional, national and international sporting events.
- Produce match reports, previews, reaction pieces and feature articles.
- Monitor developing sports stories and identify newsworthy content.
- Assist with coverage of major sporting events and tournaments.
- Conduct interviews with athletes, coaches, clubs and sports organisations where appropriate.
- Ensure all content is factually accurate and adheres to editorial standards.
- Work collaboratively with the Editorial & Site Manager and wider content team.
- Contribute ideas for future sports coverage and editorial campaigns.
- Optimise articles with basic SEO principles and engaging headlines.
You'll be able to:
- Work from home and fit the role around college, university, work, or other commitments
- Learn and use the Aiir platform to publish all news articles and content across the website
- Manage your time flexibly while still being part of an active content team
What We're Looking For
- A strong interest and knowledge of sport.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Ability to research and verify information accurately.
- Good attention to detail and grammar.
- Ability to meet deadlines and work independently.
- Enthusiasm for digital media and journalism.
- Previous writing or journalism experience is beneficial but not essential.
- Familiarity with content management systems is advantageous but training can be provided..
