Zara Ashraf

Hi, my name is Zara Ashraf, and I am a current NCTJ Diploma in Journalism student at Brunel University, London. I have also worked with the Borgen Project on a three-month internship scheme, writing articles related to poverty. As a film fanatic, my chosen field with Devote Radio includes personal favourite films and anticipated others from 2025 and 2026.
In Zara's Own Words ...
As a student, I always had a passion for writing, reading and storytelling. I progressed my English language and literature studies through GCSEs, A levels and eventually at University.
After I completed my A levels, I wanted to pursue an Art and Design degree, but later realised that the passion was no longer there. I then searched for a degree/course featuring storytelling, writing, reporting and all things news. That’s when I discovered my passion, Journalism.
Since September 2025, I have been completing a one-year NCTJ Diploma in Journalism course at Brunel University London, which I have completely fallen in love with. Alongside my modules and exams, I am a reporter for The Hillingdon Herald, a Brunel student-run newspaper for the Hillingdon borough.
I have also worked as a Writer/Journalist with The Borgen Project on an internship scheme. My roles included creating a personal fundraising campaign, advocating for global poverty change, writing online articles and contacting members of parliament weekly. A memorable and skills-driven experience that I will never forget.
