Hello, my name is Luke Patrick, and welcome back to my series on the top upcoming games of 2026. This week's instalment will focus on Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4.
It’s that time of year! The new Call of Duty game has been announced, and we can’t wait. Call of Duty seems to be returning to its roots with this new game, offering a more grounded, gritty, and realistic take on a game set closer to the modern day. This move will bring the game closer to the original Modern Warfare trilogy, which are among the series' most beloved and iconic games.
COD: Modern Warfare 4 will release on Xbox, PS5, Steam, and Nintendo Switch on October 23rd 2026.
The game will feature a main single-player campaign and multiplayer.
The campaign will take players around the world, with a main focus on the conflict between North and South Korea. After North Korea launches a full-scale invasion of the South. Brand new army conscript Private Park will face real conflict for the first time as he finds himself in the middle of a war zone and must keep his squad alive. While half a world away, an outlaw Captain Price wages a war of his own. Play as Task Force 141 and a range of brand new characters, including Private Park.
The campaign will take players to trench warfare in Korea, close-quarters combat in New York, chases in Paris, and SAS night raids in Mumbai. This last mission is especially exciting for fans of the franchise, as the Clean House mission in Call of Duty Modern Warfare (2019) was one of the most iconic and realistic missions in the game. Fans will be excited to see if this can be recreated in Modern Warfare 4.
Jeffrey Negus is the Narrative Director at Infinity War. “In South Korea, conscription is mandatory; we wanted to use that as a starting point for our character Park. He starts as a grunt who would rather be doing something else, when war breaks out, he is forced to make a decision about how he is going to respond to that”.
This game's story marks a narrative shift from the rest of the Call of Duty Modern Warfare instalments, as Captain Price was the hero, a man who risked everything to save the world, but MW4 will take him down a darker path, as he says in the trailer: “No more rules”. It will be very interesting to see the dark side of an iconic character. The trailer also revealed a showdown between Price and Ghost that fans thought they would never see.
Another mode COD fans can enjoy is the demilitarised zone (DMZ), a narrative-focused extraction mode. Players can drop into the DMZ alone or with a squad and will have to compete with other players and AI enemies as they loot, fight, and complete missions before getting themselves or their squad to extraction. What makes DMZ exciting is that each deployment is a different story, with its own challenges and tactical decisions to survive against other teams and AI enemies before finally reaching extraction. In Modern Warfare 4, DMZ is set in a South Korean exclusion zone after a nuclear reactor meltdown. Players will have to look for loot, and if they die during the mission, they will lose all their loot.
One of the biggest aspects of Call of Duty is the multiplayer experience, and, just like the rest of the game, it will return to its roots, with grounded, precise combat built around fluid movement. On October 23rd, players will be able to deploy onto 12 different 6v6 maps from locations across the world. Players will also be able to drop into large-scale maps featuring vehicle and infantry combat.
Jack Hoppus, a Technical Designer at Infinity Ward, discussed the movement he had observed during multiplayer play testing. He said, “It was cool to see people sliding over the cars that we have, it was rad to see people use our new movement tech, mantling, the sliding to get on top of cars or even use the new pipe climbing”.
The new multiplayer gameplay will feature smooth, fast, and efficient movement, without using the omni-movement mechanics from previous games.
The combat in MW4 has been tweaked by removing bullet bloom, which can cause shots to miss opponents even when players aim directly at them.
Players can also purchase the vault edition of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and will receive a number of cosmetics and special weapon skins.
The Vault Edition includes the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack containing the Blix Operator skin, Ghost Operator skin, Valeria Operator skin and a Price Operator Skin.
Players will also receive the Special Forces Operator Pack, which contains the Com SFT Operator skin, SAS Operator skin, KSK Amphibious Operator skin and the South Korean Special Forces Operator skin.
There will be some weapon skins too in the Signature Weapon Collection, containing REZI 12: Shattered Code weapon skin, the ISO Nightshade weapon skin, and the combat knife Sombra Besada weapon skin.
With Infinity Ward being the creators of the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and many more, fans will be interested to see whether Infinity Ward can reach the heights of those iconic titles.
