History of UK Radio Stations
The first radio station to begin regular broadcasting in the UK was 2LO, which went on air from London on 14 November 1922.
It was operated by the British Broadcasting Company, the organisation that later became the BBC.
The very first words broadcast were famously:
"Hello, hello, 2LO calling."
At the time, broadcasts only reached a relatively small audience in and around London — but this moment is widely recognised as the birth of UK radio broadcasting and laid the foundations for everything that followed.
