The Winter Olympics 2026

Across Northern Italy, the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games 2026 have been taking place. From February 6th, lasting to March 15th 2026, the games will be held across eight cities. The Paralympics start on the 6th March 2026.

Opening Ceremony

During the Opening Ceremony of Milano Cortina 2026, this event was highlighted by leading celebrities.Various stars such as: Mariah Carey, Laura Pausini, Andrea Bocelli and others, marked the start of the 2026 Winter Olympics. 

Alongside 25.7 million viewers, this has been the largest viewed opening since 2014. Respecting tradition, qualification events took place with sport individuals and viewers. 

Winter sports

Skiing sports

Countless sports have been occurring. The Olympic Winter Games have been holding a variation of skiing sports. These are seen from a large range.

Ski mountaineering, has made its very first appearance. Through newer sporting events being added, this shows the evolving nature of the Olympics to its viewership. At peak, 4.9 million watchers viewed Alpine Skiing, presenting its rising popularity.

 

Skating sports

Skating has been another prominent participating sport. A variety of skating sports have been participated.

The youngest contestant competing in the women's events, has currently taken the lead in the women's figure skating. 17 year old Ami Nakai, from Niigata, Japan, has achieved this.Collecting 4 medals in figure skating, Japan has made significant progress.

Other celebrated sports have been seen in the Winter Olympics. These have been favoured world-wide.

Snowboarding is currently the most watched sport in the Olympics. Evidence from a recent survey shows, it was ranked 62% for being the most watched sport. However, some unpredictable weather impacted the snowboarding games. This pressured the women's snowboard slopestyle final, to be placed on a later date because of snow and poor visibility. 

 

Current charts

Charting the 2026 Winter Olympics, presently Norway has achieved a total of 41 medals. These consist of: eighteen gold, twelve silver and eleven bronze in total. As the Olympics hold competitive games, results can change anytime. Although with Norway's strong lead, this can be seen as a strong headstart for them.

The United States is another impressive contestant, as they are currently second place. Earning a total of 33 medals containing: twelve gold, twelve silver and nine bronze.

The Netherlands are another impressive contestant, as they have a total of 20 medals. Gaining: ten gold, seven silver and three bronze, this shows the fierceness of the Olympics. Although Italy and Germany are not far behind, on the competition board. 

 

Great Britain's progress

Great Britain has earned a total of five medals so far. Achieving three gold medals, these were awarded in snowboarding and skeleton. They have won, one silver in the men's curling and a bronze medal in freestyle skiing.

The Great Britain team have taken the lead in skeleton, earning a total of two gold medals, thanks to Matthew Weston. Weston became Britain's first skeleton's winner in eight years. This has been a great starting accomplishment for the Great Britain team.

There are many positives that the Olympics brings. From helping economic development in the hosting country, this increases publicity and tourism! Alongside this, it unites regions from all around the world, competing for their love of sport.
