Conor Benn has admitted to feeling suicidal after his scheduled bout with Chris Eubank Jr fell through due to Benn failing two drug tests.
Benn (26) appeared for an exclusive interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored to talk about a failed drug test which prohibited him from competing against Chris Eubank Jr (33). The interview with Benn aired Monday night.
Benn and Eubank Jr were scheduled to fight in October last year, but the bout was called off after Benn admitted to failing two VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association) drug tests in July and September. The fight was called off by the BBBofC (British Boxing Board of Control) three days prior to the highly anticipated bout.
Morgan asked Benn whether he had felt suicidal after the initial break of the news of his failed drug tests, to which Benn responded: “Yeah, I’d say so, yeah and it upsets me now because I don’t know how I got so bad. I got in a really bad way. I struggled. There was probably about two months where … I was in a really bad way."
Benn continued: "I was sobbing most nights. I didn’t want to go to sleep because I knew what I had to wake up to. You’ve got to remember this was a nightmare for me. How has this happened? How have I got into this situation?”
Benn revealed he had tested positive for clomifene on July 25th and September 1st, but insisted he had not knowingly ingested the banned substance. Benn's team claimed that the substance may have gotten into Benn's system due to the high number of eggs he was eating during training - according to Benn's team, he was eating between 30 - 34 eggs a week.
Benn has since been working to clear his name of any wrongdoing. Two separate investigations have been taking place: one by the WBC sanctioning body and the other by the BBBofC/UKAD (UK Anti-Doping).
The WBC has recently cleared Benn of any wrongdoing and has ruled there is 'no conclusive evidence' Benn intentionally ingested the substance and that Benn's explanation about his egg consumption is likely the reason for the banned substance being in his body. The BBBofc is still investigating the case.
Since Benn's appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored, Eubank jr has tweeted about the interview:
I was 99% sure @ConorNigel was a cheat but after watching that interview with @piersmorgan now I’m 100% sure. Imagine failing TWO drugs tests & then trying to play the victim!? The balls on this kid!! Or should I say… the eggs on him 🤦🏽♂️

Benn has since been reinstated back into the WBC Welterweight rankings and will receive no punishment.
